Microbial abundance and community composition in biofilms on in-pipe sensors in a drinking water distribution system

چکیده

Collecting biofilm samples from drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) is challenging due to limited access the pipes during regular operations. We report here analysis of microbial communities in and collected sensors installed a DWDS where monochloramine used as residual disinfectant. A total 52 14 bulk were 17 pipe sections representing different ages. Prokaryotic genome copies (bacterial archaeal 16S rRNA genes, Mycobacterium spp., ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), cyanobacteria) quantified with droplet digital PCR, which revealed abundance these genes both samples. gene sequencing was carried out for subset (12 four sites). AOB species dominant low age sufficient monochloramine, whereas Nitrospira (nitrite-oxidizing bacteria) dominated higher depleted level, suggesting occurrence nitrification studied DWDS. The present study provides novel information on identity prokaryotes biofilms full-scale operational

Characterisation of the Physical Composition and Microbial Community Structure of Biofilms within a Model Full-Scale Drinking Water Distribution System

Within drinking water distribution systems (DWDS), microorganisms form multi-species biofilms on internal pipe surfaces. A matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) is produced by the attached community and provides structure and stability for the biofilm. If the EPS adhesive strength deteriorates or is overcome by external shear forces, biofilm is mobilised into the water potentially ...

Structure and microbial diversity of biofilms on different pipe materials of a model drinking water distribution systems

The experiment was conducted in three model drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) made of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC), silane cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes to which tap water was introduced. After 2 years of system operation, microbial communities in the DWDSs were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, heterotrophic plate ...

Detection of Escherichia coli in biofilms from pipe samples and coupons in drinking water distribution networks.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used for direct detection of Escherichia coli on pipe surfaces and coupons in drinking water distribution networks. Old cast iron main pipes were removed from water distribution networks in France, England, Portugal, and Latvia, and E. coli was analyzed in the biofilm. In addition, 44 flat coupons made of cast iron, polyvinyl chloride, or stainless ...
